The oil of argane comes from green almonds of the argan (Argania
spinosa). This tree is little known since it pushes only in
the south-western part of Morocco on a surface of
700,000-800,000 hectares.
The
argan is a very resistant tree which can live from 150 to
200 years. It is adapted perfectly to the aridity of the
south-western areas of Morocco. Its roots are inserted very
deep in the ground in the search of water. This system of
root makes it possible to stabilize the ground, protecting
it from erosion and limiting the projection of the desert.
The argan plays an essential part in the maintenance of
ecological balance and the economic situation of the
population. In 1999, UNESCO recognized and classified the
argan like world inheritance. In less than one century, more
than one third of the forest of argans disappeared.
